{"id":954,"date":"2008-03-17T00:05:14","date_gmt":"2008-03-17T05:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=954"},"modified":"2008-03-17T00:24:30","modified_gmt":"2008-03-17T05:24:30","slug":"uc-santa-cruz-engineering-students-win-national-robotics-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=954","title":{"rendered":"UC Santa Cruz engineering students win national robotics competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/media\/Climber_Team-350.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/tn_Climber_Team-350.jpg\"  height=\"141\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 141px\" \/><\/a>In addition to the annual Space Elevator Games, put on by the Spaceward Foundation with prize money supplied by NASA, there is also the annual &#8220;Junior Space Elevator Games&#8221;.\u00a0 Last year, they were held in conjunction with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sesinstitute.org\/\">2007 Space Engineering and Science Institute workshop<\/a> (which this writer attended and blogged about <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=574\">here<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=575\">here<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=576\">here<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=577\">here<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=578\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This year, this competition was held in conjunction with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/content.asce.org\/conferences\/earth2008\/welcome.html\">2008 Earth and Space Conference<\/a>.\u00a0 A team from the University of California &#8211; Santa Cruz was the winner.\u00a0 From the press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;A team of four students from the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz won the first-place trophy in a national student robotics competition for their design of a solar-powered robot that can climb up a vertical ribbon carrying a payload.
