{"id":949,"date":"2008-03-12T02:16:58","date_gmt":"2008-03-12T07:16:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=949"},"modified":"2008-03-12T09:50:51","modified_gmt":"2008-03-12T14:50:51","slug":"a-favor-from-my-readers-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=949","title":{"rendered":"A favor from my readers, please&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>See comment at the end of this post &#8211; now I feel stupid&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"134\" src=\"\/media\/MelissaKern.jpg\"  height=\"166\" style=\"width: 134px; height: 166px\" \/>Most of you know of or have heard of\u00a0Liftport &#8211; the company that audaciously went into business to build a Space Elevator.\u00a0 The company was composed of some\u00a0occasionally paid\u00a0people and many volunteers &#8211; people who worked on this project because they believed in the dream.<\/p>\n<p>One of them is Brian Dunbar &#8211; the system administrator \/ webmaster \/ all around tech-guy for Liftport.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve ever had any dealings with Brian, you know that he is gracious, kind and a pleasure to work with.\u00a0 In addition to his &#8216;day job&#8217; and his work at Liftport, he also has a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/space4commerce.blogspot.com\">blog<\/a>, a good one, one which is in my RSS reader so that I can always stay up to date with his musings and commentary.<\/p>\n<p>Today I was shocked and saddened to learn on his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/space4commerce.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/project-fiver.html\">blog<\/a> that Brian&#8217;s wife has ALS (Lou Gehrig&#8217;s disease).\u00a0 Melissa has been a huge supporter of all things Tolkien and has been waiting expectantly for the production and release of THE HOBBIT.<\/p>\n<p>Brian has come up with the brilliant idea of petitioning New Line (the producers of THE HOBBIT) to cast Melissa as an extra in the movie.\u00a0 As he puts it;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We don&#8217;t know the course her disease will take, so she worries that she won&#8217;t be around to see the movies in theaters, so this was the next best thing. Even being a non-speaking crowd-hobbit in the background of one scene would still mean the world to her.
