{"id":862,"date":"2007-11-10T02:37:39","date_gmt":"2007-11-10T07:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=862"},"modified":"2007-11-10T12:30:38","modified_gmt":"2007-11-10T17:30:38","slug":"the-2007-light-racers-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=862","title":{"rendered":"The 2007 Light Racers Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"151\" src=\"\/media\/2007SEGames\/LightRacersLogo.jpg\"  height=\"71\" style=\"width: 151px; height: 71px\" \/>Along with the Space Elevator Games, the 2007 Light Racers Competition was held.\u00a0 This was a competition of model &#8220;cars&#8221; (I use the term &#8220;cars&#8221; very loosely here) which were powered solely by light; no fuel, no batteries, no sun, no problem (as the promo says).<\/p>\n<p>Although not strictly Space Elevator related, it was held at the same venue as the Space Elevator Games were and, I must say, was quite a crowd-pleasing event.\u00a0 This event was targeted towards families and school-age kids and includes a science curriculum which can be taught that has studies relevant to this event (for more info, see the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceward.org\/lightRacers.html\">Light Racers homepage<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>There were several (8-10) teams entered.\u00a0 Many of the cars didn&#8217;t move at all, or just barely.\u00a0 I&#8217;m guessing that they had been &#8220;tested&#8221; outdoors in sunlight.\u00a0 When brought indoors and put in the spotlight beams, there just wasn&#8217;t enough juice generated to get them going.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s valuable experience which will be put to good use next time.<\/p>\n<p>The competition was held indoors in Building 2 (Climber Row) on Saturday, October 20th.\u00a0 Ben Shelef of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceward.org\">Spaceward<\/a> foundation laid out a course\u00a0the cars had to navigate &#8211; they needed to travel from one end to the other without veering outside the boundary lanes.\u00a0 There was one large spotlight trained on the car from start to finish and a second, booster light which was trained on the car at the start, just to get it going.<\/p>\n<p>The two fastest cars were also the two smallest.\u00a0 The fastest car, by far, was the one put together by McGill University.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t win any prizes though and will be the subject of my next post.\u00a0 This post is dedicated to the winning team, the Kansas City Space Kids, a subset of the Space Pirates.\u00a0 This car was put together at the last minute by Brian Turner and his team and was good enough to win a $2,500 prize!<\/p>\n<p>I have two videos for this post.\u00a0 The first was nearly a prize-winning run, making it from one end of the racecourse to the other, but veering out of bounds just before reaching the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8nOyCY9JPjU[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0second video is of the winning run.\u00a0 The KC Space Kids car completes the entire course, inside of the boundaries, to the acclaim of the crowd!<\/p>\n<p>[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M5lwn4MhmVw[\/youtube]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Along with the Space Elevator Games, the 2007 Light Racers Competition was held.\u00a0 This was a competition of model &#8220;cars&#8221; (I use the term &#8220;cars&#8221; very loosely here) which were powered solely by light; no fuel, no batteries, no sun, no problem (as the promo says).
