{"id":853,"date":"2007-11-01T12:45:12","date_gmt":"2007-11-01T17:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=853"},"modified":"2007-11-01T21:08:39","modified_gmt":"2007-11-02T02:08:39","slug":"two-almost-competitors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=853","title":{"rendered":"Two almost-competitors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"108\" src=\"\/media\/Elevator2010Logo.jpg\"  height=\"53\" style=\"width: 108px; height: 53px\" \/>As you all know, there were a total of eight teams which competed in this year&#8217;s Climber \/Power-Beaming competition.\u00a0 Two other teams, however, almost made it and they brought their climbers to display to the crowds and to the other competitors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/2007SEGames\/DSC00327.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/2007SEGames\/tn_DSC00327.jpg\"  height=\"113\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 113px\" \/><\/a>One was from Arthur Shay&#8217;s\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teamzerog.com\/\">Team Zero-G<\/a>.\u00a0 This is a Stirling-engine powered climber, the third attempt, I think, at doing such an entry at the Games.\u00a0 None of them have been able to compete, however, so either the technology is flawed or it just hasn&#8217;t been executed as well (or as soon) as it should.\u00a0 Incidentally, Arthur was\/is trying to make this climber an open \/ cooperative effort (ala Michael Laine and Liftport).\u00a0 If you&#8217;re interested in participating with this team at next year&#8217;s Games, give Arthur a shout at zero.g.tec [AT] gmail [DOT] com &#8211; he&#8217;d love to hear from you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/2007SEGames\/DSC00189.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"113\" src=\"\/media\/2007SEGames\/tn_DSC00189.jpg\"  height=\"200\" style=\"width: 113px; height: 200px\" \/><\/a>The other was Michael Harvey&#8217;s entry;\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anconn.com\/\">Andromeda Connection<\/a>.\u00a0 This device was to be powered by MOLPSol, their &#8220;Solar Laser&#8221;.\u00a0 From\u00a0his website: <em>&#8220;A solar laser. Of course any device producing white light cannot be considered a laser in the strictest sense of the word, but, it&#8217;s similar to a laser in that it produces a collimated beam of light with a relatively narrow bandwidth.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 It would have been very interesting to see this Climber in action.\u00a0 And, I&#8217;m not trying to be snarky or anything, but this Climber looks for all the world\u00a0like something out of &#8220;Lost in Space&#8221;. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>I was able to talk with both competitors briefly, certainly not as much as I would have liked to &#8211; but other events \/ blogging kept me pretty busy.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s hope that we see both of these competitors at next year&#8217;s Games.\u00a0 The Prize Money is now a cool $900,000\u00a0&#8211; enough to get\u00a0anyone&#8217;s pecuniary\u00a0juices flowing, for sure.<\/p>\n<p>Click on the thumbnails for larger versions of the Climbers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you all know, there were a total of eight teams which competed in this year&#8217;s Climber \/Power-Beaming competition.\u00a0 Two other teams, however, almost made it and they brought their climbers to display to the crowds and to the other competitors.
