{"id":843,"date":"2007-10-22T18:57:54","date_gmt":"2007-10-22T23:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=843"},"modified":"2007-10-22T18:57:54","modified_gmt":"2007-10-22T23:57:54","slug":"2007-space-elevator-games-entry-75","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=843","title":{"rendered":"2007 Space Elevator Games &#8211; (Entry 75)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\">F L A S H\u00a0\u00a0 U P D A T E ! ! !<\/p>\n<p>There will be one more attempt tonight &#8211; USST is setting up again right now.<\/p>\n<p>Safety is now a concern.\u00a0 People know that this ribbon might break.\u00a0 USST knows that\u00a0if this happens, it\u00a0may damage their climber, perhaps irrepairibly.\u00a0 Nevertheless, they&#8217;ve decided to go for it &#8211; and who can blame them.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve been working for this prize for, literally, years, and it would be a shame to have to turn back now.<\/p>\n<p>Special procedures are being put into place to minimize the amount of personnel near the ribbon while setting up for this run.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/2007SEGames\/20071022\/DSC00445.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/2007SEGames\/20071022\/tn_DSC00445.jpg\"  height=\"113\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 113px\" \/><\/a>There is obviously something wrong with this ribbon or the conditions here have been too much for it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s too early to know what happened &#8211; obviously Spaceward will be sending the ribbon back to Siegling for a failure analysis.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll note that, in addition to the break, there is fraying along the edges.\u00a0 Perhaps this indicates where maximum stress was being applied (during the ribbons constant twisting in the wind) and is the cause of the break.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s for the engineers to decipher.<\/p>\n<p>So, no promises for a successful climb, or even a climb at all, but another attempt is being made.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll keep everyone posted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>F L A S H\u00a0\u00a0 U P D A T E ! ! !
