{"id":811,"date":"2007-10-19T00:42:15","date_gmt":"2007-10-19T05:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=811"},"modified":"2007-10-19T01:30:16","modified_gmt":"2007-10-19T06:30:16","slug":"2007-space-elevator-games-entry-43","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=811","title":{"rendered":"2007 Space Elevator Games &#8211; (Entry 43)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"126\" src=\"\/media\/USSTNewLogo.jpg\"  height=\"114\" style=\"width: 126px; height: 114px\" \/>USST has qualified!!<\/p>\n<p>They took two shots at it.\u00a0 The first failed for reasons I will find out.\u00a0 In the second attempt, their climber moved upward several feet very rapidly, but then began to slip.\u00a0 It had just started raining out and the belt was beginning to be slippery.<\/p>\n<p>So, the judges determined that weather related conditions prevented a full climb (as they had determined with Technology Tycoons).\u00a0 Weather conditions are not allowed to disqualify a climb.\u00a0 USST&#8217;s climber clearly moved up under power.<\/p>\n<p>So, finally a success tonight.\u00a0 I have no pictures &#8211; my new Sony HDR-CX7 just doesn&#8217;t do this well.\u00a0 Marc Boucher, from the Space Elevator Reference DID get good pictures and I will link to them as soon as they are up.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations USST!!<\/p>\n<p>Next (and last) up tonight is Centaurus with their second attempt of the evening.<\/p>\n<p>Update &#8211; I posted earlier on this blog that USST&#8217;s climber had been slipping on the ribbon (due to the rain) and this is why it had stopped.\u00a0 I had heard this comment from someone in the crowd\u00a0who I thought was\u00a0a USST member.\u00a0 It turns out this person is NOT from USST, and was just speculating.\u00a0 Clayton Ruszkowski, team captain, told me that USST had deliberately shut the laser down.<\/p>\n<p>Also, in listening to a conversation between Clayton and Dr. Brad Edwards, Dr. Edwards said that USST&#8217;s climb represented the FIRST laser-powered climb of this type outside of a lab.\u00a0 So, double-congratulations are due to USST!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>USST has qualified!!
