{"id":749,"date":"2007-10-01T22:44:12","date_gmt":"2007-10-02T03:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=749"},"modified":"2007-10-02T11:52:53","modified_gmt":"2007-10-02T16:52:53","slug":"still-another-use-for-duct-tape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=749","title":{"rendered":"Still another use for Duct Tape?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/media\/TornRibbon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/media\/tn_TornRibbon.jpg\"  \/><\/a>LaserMotive ran into a serious\u00a0problem recently.\u00a0 You can read about it on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasermotive.com\/blog\/?p=83\">blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If this had happened 3-4 months ago, it would have been long forgotten by now, I&#8217;m sure.\u00a0 Happening now, however, it becomes a major issue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"127\" src=\"\/media\/DuctTape.jpg\"  height=\"102\" style=\"width: 127px; height: 102px\" \/>I vote for Duct Tape (&#8220;If it moves when it shouldn&#8217;t, use Duct Tape &#8211;\u00a0If it doesn&#8217;t move when it should, use WD-40&#8221;).\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 I think it would be perfect for this.\u00a0 And, there&#8217;s precedent for it in the US Space Program.\u00a0 From the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duct_tape\">Wikipedia article on Duct Tape<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Duct tape&#8217;s versatility and holding power are evidenced by its nickname in <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Engineering\" title=\"Engineering\"><em>engineering<\/em><\/a><em> circles: &#8220;the ultimate material.&#8221; It is commonly used in situations that require a strong, flexible adhesive, particularly when exposure to the elements is a concern.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NASA\" title=\"NASA\"><em>NASA<\/em><\/a><em> engineers&#8217; faith in duct tape as an emergency tool was rewarded in <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1970\" title=\"1970\"><em>1970<\/em><\/a><em>, when the square <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carbon_dioxide\" title=\"Carbon dioxide\"><em>carbon dioxide<\/em><\/a><em> filters from <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_13\" title=\"Apollo 13\"><em>Apollo 13<\/em><\/a><em>&#8216;s failed command module had to be modified to fit round receptacles in the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lunar_module\" title=\"Lunar module\"><em>lunar module<\/em><\/a><em>, which was being used as a lifeboat after an explosion en route to the moon. A workaround was made using duct tape and other items on board Apollo 13, with the ground crew relaying directions to the spacecraft and its crew. The lunar module CO<sub>2<\/sub> scrubbers started working again, saving the lives of the three <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astronauts\" title=\"Astronauts\"><em>astronauts<\/em><\/a><em> on board.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In case of &#8220;acute psychosis&#8221; during a space mission, NASA procedures call for the use of duct tape to restrain the astronaut. <sup id=\"_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duct_tape#_note-3\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Keith_Canfield&amp;action=edit\" title=\"Keith Canfield\" class=\"new\"><em>Keith Canfield<\/em><\/a><em>, who designed the scrubber modification in just two days, said later that he knew the problem was solvable when it was confirmed that duct tape was on the spacecraft: &#8220;I felt like we were home free&#8221; he said in <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2005\" title=\"2005\"><em>2005<\/em><\/a><em>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>(Click on the ribbon picture or visit the LaserMotive blog for a larger version)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>03 October update &#8211; this suggestion, of course, is slightly tongue-in-cheek.\u00a0 Check out the LaserMotive blog for my real suggested solution&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LaserMotive ran into a serious\u00a0problem recently.\u00a0 You can read about it on their blog.
