{"id":639,"date":"2007-06-06T01:39:26","date_gmt":"2007-06-06T06:39:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=639"},"modified":"2007-06-06T01:39:26","modified_gmt":"2007-06-06T06:39:26","slug":"a-space-elevator-for-carbon-dioxide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=639","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;A Space Elevator for Carbon Dioxide&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/NorthernLights.jpg\"  height=\"132\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 132px\" \/>No, not really, but I liked the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wired.com\/wiredscience\/2007\/06\/a_space_elevato.html\">title<\/a> \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 The author\u00a0is talking about an idea of UCLA physicist Alfred Wong to use a laser to alter\u00a0CO2 molecules so that\u00a0they would leave the earth&#8217;s atmosphere at the pole&#8217;s , i.e. creating a &#8220;Space Elevator&#8221; so that our excess CO2 would be dumped into space.<\/p>\n<p>Other than the title, the link this posting has to a &#8220;real&#8221; space elevator is an email sent to me by reader Howard Katseff over a year ago, where he wondered if\u00a0somehow\u00a0a Space Elevator &#8220;tube&#8221; could be used to funnel a power plant&#8217;s emissions\u00a0into space.\u00a0 The problem with this idea (and with Alfred Wong&#8217;s proposal) is just the sheer mass of\u00a0CO2 we spew into the atmosphere.\u00a0 According to a couple of websites I&#8217;ve looked at, we, as a planet, generate well over 20 million metric tons of CO2 each and every DAY.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a lot of gassified dry ice, more than\u00a0we can deal with via Space Elevator tubes or lasers.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s another issue too.\u00a0 Are we so sure we want to get rid of this stuff?\u00a0 We, as a species, might need it some day.\u00a0 It would be hell to have thrown it all away and then find\u00a0out that we need\u00a0it to solve another global problem&#8230;\u00a0 Conservation, sequestration and zero-emission power plant and vehicles &#8211; I think that&#8217;s the only way to go (IMHO)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>(Photo credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\/people\/nickrussill\/\">Nick Russill<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No, not really, but I liked the title \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 The author\u00a0is talking about an idea of UCLA physicist Alfred Wong to use a laser to alter\u00a0CO2 molecules so that\u00a0they would leave the earth&#8217;s atmosphere at the pole&#8217;s , i.e. creating a &#8220;Space Elevator&#8221; so that our excess CO2 would be dumped into space.
