‘I was looking at my old college physics \u00a0textbook, Alonso-Finn Fundamental University Physics Copyright 1967, I \u00a0Mechanics, and came across a quote, which when placed in today’s context of \u00a0Carbon Nanotubes in regards to Van Der Waals force is somewhat spooky.\u00a0 Insight \u00a0from 300 years ago.’<\/p>\n

The Parts of all homogeneal hard \u00a0Bodies which fully touch one another, stick together very strongly. \u00a0And for \u00a0explaining how this may be, some have invented hooked \u00a0Atoms….<\/em><\/p>\n

I had rather infer from their \u00a0Cohesion, that their Particles attract one another by some Force, which in \u00a0immediate Contact is exceedingly strong, and reaches not far from the Particles \u00a0with any sensible Effect…. There are therefore Agents in Nature able to make \u00a0the Particles of Bodies stick together by very strong Attractions. \u00a0And it is the \u00a0business of experimental Philosophy to find them \u00a0out.<\/em><\/p>\n
