{"id":370,"date":"2006-10-13T22:57:05","date_gmt":"2006-10-14T03:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=370"},"modified":"2006-10-14T01:42:56","modified_gmt":"2006-10-14T06:42:56","slug":"7-days-and-counting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=370","title":{"rendered":"7 Days and Counting !"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"\/media\/spacewardfoundationlogo.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" \/><img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"\/media\/elevator2010logo.jpg\" class=\"alignleft\" \/>The first members of the Elevator2010 Team, Ben Shelef (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceward.org\">Spaceward Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elevator2010.com\">Elevator2010<\/a> CEO), Dave Carty (Launch Director) and Benjamin Bakhshi (Intern), have, after a long and grueling 20-hour drive from California,\u00a0arrived onsite with a truck full of equipment.\u00a0 They report that things at the site \u201clook good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"\/media\/KCSpacePiratesFlag.jpg\" class=\"alignleft\" \/> <a href=\"\/media\/KCSpacePirateMirror.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/tn_KCSpacePirateMirror.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcspacepirates.com\">Kansas City Space Pirates<\/a> have arrived in force.\u00a0 Team Captain Brian Turner has brought along his younger sister, his mother, his father, his stepfather, the neighbor\u2019s kids, the neighbor\u2019s kid\u2019s mother, etc., 15 in all.\u00a0 They arrived in a convoy consisting of 3 trucks and 2 trailers and\u00a0are now working on fine-tuning their Solar Concentrator mirror array, a truly impressive structure.\u00a0 They have twenty (count them, 20) mirrors; each sporting a dimension of 10 feet by 4 feet.\u00a0 These will be tuned to produce a spot that is only 3 feet in diameter.\u00a0 This will be further concentrated on the climber (by a factor of 30) by use of a parabolic trough.\u00a0 This beam will then be focused on water-cooled, high-power solar cells.\u00a0 In my opinion, it\u2019s either going to run like a bat out of hell or burn their climber to a crisp \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 The photo shows some of the Space Pirate Mirror Arrays &#8211; Brian&#8217;s mom is in the background and, on the Elevator2010 website, you can see her hauling one of the mirrors around &#8211; click on\u00a0the photo\u00a0to view a larger version of\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"\/media\/TurboCrawlerLogo.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.space-elevator.de.vu\">German TurboCrawler team<\/a> is in a bind, however.\u00a0 Their equipment has failed to clear customs in Los Angeles and, with them needing to set it up ASAP for their Qualification runs, they\u00a0 have a problem indeed.\u00a0 Dave Carty from the Elevator2010 team is working with them and with Customs to try and get this sorted out ASAP.\u00a0 Let\u2019s wish our German friends luck, and, if you know someone at LA Customs, shoot off an email to Ben Shelef (ben AT spaceward.org).<\/p>\n<p>Also, Ben reports that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/distance.nmsu.edu\/externals\/creative_media\/\">Creative Media Institute<\/a>, who is documenting the competition, is also onsite and taking it all in.<\/p>\n<p>More tomorrow !<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first members of the Elevator2010 Team, Ben Shelef (Spaceward Foundation\u00a0and Elevator2010 CEO), Dave Carty (Launch Director) and Benjamin Bakhshi (Intern), have, after a long and grueling 20-hour drive from California,\u00a0arrived onsite with a truck full of equipment.\u00a0 They report that things at the site \u201clook good\u201d.
