{"id":1647,"date":"2014-09-09T21:11:50","date_gmt":"2014-09-10T02:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1647"},"modified":"2014-09-30T11:43:01","modified_gmt":"2014-09-30T16:43:01","slug":"the-cost-of-living-on-the-moon-and-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1647","title":{"rendered":"The cost of living on the Moon (and Mars!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/tn_ETAndTheMoon.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" height=\"133\"  width=\"200\" \/>Several weeks ago, I was contacted by the people at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neomam.com\" target=\"_blank\">NeomamStudios<\/a>, telling me about a graphic they had put together showing the total cost of living on the Moon.\u00a0 This was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedyspacecenter.com\/events\/2014\/july\/apollo-anniversary.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">45th Moon Landing Anniversary Celebration<\/a> and is, I think, of interest to people who support the idea of a Space Elevator.<\/p>\n<p>If you are like me, and believe that the major (or at least &#8220;a&#8221; major) use of the Space Elevator is to help us colonize the solar system and, to paraphrase Robert Heinlein, get some of our eggs out of earth&#8217;s &#8220;basket&#8221;, then numbers like this are what we need to make our case.\u00a0 It will be very, very, very, very expensive to create and support a lunar colony using traditional rocket technology, there&#8217;s just no getting around it.\u00a0 A space elevator is the only feasible way to do something like this.<\/p>\n<p>I could have reproduced the entire graphic here, but it&#8217;s quite large and I&#8217;d rather link to one which is already out there.\u00a0 I went to the Neomam web site and the graphic is there, so I&#8217;ve linked to it and reproduced just a portion of it here.\u00a0 And, lo and behold, when I went to their website, I found they had also created a graphic showing numbers for the living costs on Mars.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve also reproduced a portion of that graphic here and clicking on either one of them will take you to the Neoman website where you can see the full graphics.<\/p>\n<p>Fun facts from the graphics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On Mars, it would cost $37,244 to watch Psy&#8217;s Gangnam Style in HD on YouTube.<\/li>\n<li>On the Moon, downloading &#8220;Fly me to the Moon&#8221; would cost about 12.8 cents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/neomam.com\/old-portfolio\/the-cost-of-living-on-the-moon\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/media\/TCOLOTM_Trimmed.png\" width=\"45%\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/neomam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/costofmars_thumb.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"\/media\/TCOLOM_Trimmed.png\" width=\"45%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several weeks ago, I was contacted by the people at NeomamStudios, telling me about a graphic they had put together showing the total cost of living on the Moon.\u00a0 This was part of the 45th Moon Landing Anniversary Celebration and is, I think, of interest to people who support the idea of a Space Elevator.
