{"id":1640,"date":"2014-08-24T15:13:31","date_gmt":"2014-08-24T20:13:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1640"},"modified":"2014-09-29T23:56:36","modified_gmt":"2014-09-30T04:56:36","slug":"space-elevator-speech-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1640","title":{"rendered":"Space Elevator Speech Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New to the conference this year was a competition to create an &#8220;Elevator speech&#8221;.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re unfamiliar with the concept, the idea of such a speech is this; assume you&#8217;re in an elevator with someone who you want to convince of the need and usefulness of building a Space Elevator.\u00a0 You have only a short time &#8211; it is an elevator ride.\u00a0 In case you&#8217;re unfamiliar with the concept, there are several articles available &#8211; a typical one is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/stories\/2007-06-18\/the-perfect-elevator-pitchbusinessweek-business-news-stock-market-and-financial-advice\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/2014SEC\/Sunday\/IMG_5101F.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/2014SEC\/Sunday\/tn_IMG_5101F.jpg\" class=\"alignright\"  \/><\/a>Conference attendee Peter Robinson came up with the idea and was in charge of the competition.\u00a0 It was announced at the beginning of the conference and a sign-up sheet was available for all those who wanted to participate.\u00a0 The competition happened today, just before lunch.\u00a0 There were a total of 7 speakers and 4 judges (of which I was honored to be one).<\/p>\n<p>Each person talked, in turn, for no more than 90 seconds (Peter timed it and cut off the people who exceeded it) and the judges created scores on &#8220;Technical Merit&#8221; and &#8220;Style&#8221;.\u00a0 Peter tabulated the scores and the winners were announced.\u00a0 First place received a $100 Amazon gift certificate and Second Place received a $50 Amazon gift certificate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/2014SEC\/Sunday\/IMG_5105F.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/2014SEC\/Sunday\/tn_IMG_5105F.jpg\" class=\"alignleft\" height=\"134\"  width=\"200\" \/><\/a>Lana Gorlinski was awarded First Prize and Campbell Gorlinski was awarded Second Prize.\u00a0 All of the competitors did a fine job.\u00a0 This picture shows Lana and Campbell, with their prizes, and most of the rest of the Conference attendees.<\/p>\n<p>This competition had a very practical aspect, making all of us who support the concept of a space elevator think in terms of convincing others, in a very short time, of the worthiness of the project.\u00a0 I would expect this competition to become a fixture at future Space Elevator Conferences.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New to the conference this year was a competition to create an &#8220;Elevator speech&#8221;.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re unfamiliar with the concept, the idea of such a speech is this; assume you&#8217;re in an elevator with someone who you want to convince of the need and usefulness of building a Space Elevator.\u00a0 You have only a short [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1640","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-isec"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1640","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1640"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1640\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1676,"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1640\/revisions\/1676"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1640"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1640"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1640"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
