{"id":1527,"date":"2012-06-17T21:57:10","date_gmt":"2012-06-18T02:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1527"},"modified":"2012-06-17T21:57:10","modified_gmt":"2012-06-18T02:57:10","slug":"getting-to-space-on-a-thread","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1527","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Getting to space on a thread&#8230;&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/tn_BlueHorizonLogo.gif\" class=\"alignleft\" height=\"164\"  width=\"200\" \/>While reviewing some of the older Space Elevator Conference programs and trying to see if some of the presenters were still active in the SE arena, I ran across this 2007 paper by Major Jason Kent.<\/p>\n<p>This paper, entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.au.af.mil\/au\/awc\/awcgate\/cst\/bh_kent.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Getting to Space on a Thread &#8211; Space Elevator as an Alternative Access to Space<\/a>&#8221; was a &#8220;Blue Horizons paper&#8221; written for the Center for Strategy and Technology for the Air War College.<\/p>\n<p>Major Kent presented a couple of papers at the 2008 Space Elevator Conference and I remember having some very interesting discussions with him during one of the lunches.<\/p>\n<p>Because a Space Elevator will allow such scalable, reliable (and relatively inexpensive) access to space, there is no question that it will be a very significant military asset to whoever controls it.\u00a0 There is a viewpoint that if the world cooperatively builds a Space Elevator, then, perhaps, we can make it a &#8216;universal good&#8217;, much like, say, the Internet is.\u00a0 Others (including me) are not so optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, it is very interesting to see a military evaluation of the Space Elevator and the article is (IMHO) well worth the read.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While reviewing some of the older Space Elevator Conference programs and trying to see if some of the presenters were still active in the SE arena, I ran across this 2007 paper by Major Jason Kent.
