{"id":1526,"date":"2012-06-06T23:30:27","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T04:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1526"},"modified":"2012-06-06T23:30:27","modified_gmt":"2012-06-07T04:30:27","slug":"the-return-of-the-kansas-city-space-pirates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1526","title":{"rendered":"The Return of the Kansas City Space Pirates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Followers of this blog and\/or the Space Elevator Games are very familiar with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcspacepirates.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kansas City Space Pirates<\/a>.\u00a0 Captain Brian Turner and his fellow team members competed in several of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorgames.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Space Elevator Games &#8211; Power Beaming<\/a> competitions and acquitted themselves very well.<\/p>\n<p>They have a new challenge they want to meet and that is to break the record for longest continuous flight of an aircraft fueled solely by wireless power-beaming.\u00a0 Several days ago, they issued this <a href=\"\/media\/20120523_KCSP_PressRelease.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Press Release<\/a>, detailing what their plans are.\u00a0 Money quote from the Release:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/tn_LaserPowerOn.gif\" class=\"alignleft\" \/>This August the KC Space Pirates will take the next step in the development of laser powered flight and in the art of wireless power beaming. We will attempt to keep a one pound robotic aircraft flying for 2 full days (48 hours), nearly 4 times the previous world record&#8230;The date of this attempt is set to coincide with the International Space Elevator Consortium\u2019s (www.isec.org)<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorconference.org\" target=\"_blank\"> annual conference<\/a> in August of this year.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The current record is held by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasermotive.com\" target=\"_blank\">LaserMotive<\/a>, also a veteran (and prize-winner) of the Power-Beaming competition. \u00a0 With NASA ending its support for the Power-Beaming competition, it&#8217;s good to see that the spirit of competing is alive and well.<\/p>\n<p>More to come soon &#8211; bring it on!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Followers of this blog and\/or the Space Elevator Games are very familiar with the Kansas City Space Pirates.\u00a0 Captain Brian Turner and his fellow team members competed in several of the Space Elevator Games &#8211; Power Beaming competitions and acquitted themselves very well.
