{"id":1507,"date":"2012-02-18T11:36:46","date_gmt":"2012-02-18T17:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1507"},"modified":"2012-02-18T11:36:46","modified_gmt":"2012-02-18T17:36:46","slug":"legos-and-the-space-elevator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1507","title":{"rendered":"LEGOs and the Space Elevator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/tn_TheCultOfLego_Cover.png\" width=\"161\" class=\"alignleft\" height=\"200\"  \/>Over the past several years, I have posted multiple entries on this blog about Space Elevators and Legos.\u00a0 The two seem to go together like fish and chips or ham and eggs or Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries.\u00a0 Oh, wait&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>For several years now, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsea.jp\" target=\"_blank\">Japan Space Elevator Association (JSEA)<\/a> has had an annual competition (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsea.jp\/ja\/node\/1237\" target=\"_blank\">LASER<\/a>) devoted to children building models of Space Elevators and, this past year, the American Space Elevator Conference added a similar event to its schedule.<\/p>\n<p>And now a new book has been published titled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cult-LEGO-John-Baichtal\/dp\/1593273916\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1329584025\" target=\"_blank\">The Cult of LEGO<\/a><\/em>, by John Baichtal and Joe Meno.\u00a0 It is an absolutely fascinating look into this whole genre, everything from the history of LEGOs, Minifigs, LEGO art, the whole robotics &#8211; Mindstorm thing (which I really would like to do one day)., etc.\u00a0 The last chapter of the book, entitled &#8220;<em>Serious LEGO<\/em>&#8221; talks about LEGOs being used for Autism Therapy and &#8220;Open Prosthetics&#8221;; amputees using LEGOs to help design the next generation of prostheses &#8211; talk about being \u00dcber cool.<\/p>\n<p>And, in that same chapter, <em>Serious LEGO<\/em>, is a sub-section entitled &#8220;<em>Prototyping a Space Elevator<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 Here the authors discuss the LEGO model of a Space Elevator that the representatives from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsea.jp\" target=\"_blank\">Japan Space Elevator Association (JSEA)<\/a> brought to the 2008 Space Elevator Conference, complete with pictures (I had earlier posted about the JSEA LEGO Space Elevator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1052\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>While not inexpensive (prices on Amazon for this book currently run from $20 on up), it is a really fine look into the whole cult of LEGO.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve skimmed through the entire book and am now about 1\/4 of the way through a serious read of it.<\/p>\n<p>Highly, highly, recommended&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/LEGOSpaceElevator.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/tn_LEGOSpaceElevator.png\" width=\"150\" class=\"alignright\" height=\"200\"  \/><\/a>And, on a related note, there are now several pictures posted on Flickr of entries into last summer&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/toysnbricks.com\/winners-for-the-next-generation-of-space-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Next Generation of Space Travel competition<\/a>.\u00a0 The winning entry was, fittingly enough, of a Space Elevator.\u00a0 Shown is a picture of the winning entry.\u00a0 Click on the thumbnail to view a full-size version of the picture.\u00a0 You can see more pictures of this entry <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/legitalex\/sets\/72157627158524211\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past several years, I have posted multiple entries on this blog about Space Elevators and Legos.\u00a0 The two seem to go together like fish and chips or ham and eggs or Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries.\u00a0 Oh, wait&#8230;
