{"id":1505,"date":"2012-02-13T17:33:45","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T23:33:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1505"},"modified":"2012-02-14T21:39:21","modified_gmt":"2012-02-15T03:39:21","slug":"learning-new-tricks-from-spiders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1505","title":{"rendered":"Learning new tricks from spiders&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/media\/172-NATURE-spidersilkweb-Page1Only.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/tn_172-NATURE-spidersilkweb-Page1Only.png\" title=\"Nature Magazine Cover\" alt=\"Nature Magazine Cover\" width=\"152\" class=\"alignleft\" height=\"200\"  \/><\/a>In the February 2, 2012 issue of Nature, there is an article entitled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v482\/n7383\/full\/nature10739.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Nonlinear material behaviour of spider silk yields robust webs&#8221;<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 This article is, unfortunately, paywalled, but you can probably find a copy of the magazine at your local bookstore.\u00a0 The Editor&#8217;s Summary of the article is as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Spider silk is one of nature&#8217;s &#8216;super-materials&#8217;. Its remarkable mechanical properties include high extensibility and strength comparable to that of steel. But Markus Buehler and colleagues show that it is not just these virtues that make silk ideal for web construction. Silk&#8217;s nonlinear stress response \u2014 linear at low strain, suddenly softening as strain increases then stiffening prior to failure \u2014 is also critical. This behaviour allows webs to keep their shape when experiencing small, distributed loads such as those exerted by wind.
