{"id":1501,"date":"2012-01-06T22:12:53","date_gmt":"2012-01-07T04:12:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1501"},"modified":"2012-01-09T17:01:19","modified_gmt":"2012-01-09T23:01:19","slug":"google-x-and-the-space-elevator-and-trickle-down-economics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1501","title":{"rendered":"Google X and the Space Elevator &#8211; and trickle-down economics&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/tn_GoogleXLogo.gif\" vspace=\"3\" width=\"200\" class=\"alignright\" height=\"79\" \/>Catching up on an older item here&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Over at the Space Elevator Reference, there was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevator.com\/2011\/11\/google-x-and-the-space-elevator.html\" target=\"_blank\">a post<\/a> last November about a new product lab at Google, called Google X.\u00a0 The original story referred to is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/11\/14\/technology\/at-google-x-a-top-secret-lab-dreaming-up-the-future.html?_r=2&amp;ref=technology\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And, it didn&#8217;t take long to find the naysayers&#8230;\u00a0 In the Times Science online edition of November 21st, columnist Jeffrey Kluger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/health\/article\/0,8599,2099830,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">likens the Space Elevator<\/a> to &#8216;&#8230;trickle-down economics&#8217; &#8211; one of those ideas that &#8216;just won&#8217;t go away&#8217;.\u00a0 He lists a long litany of reasons why a Space Elevator &#8216;probably never will&#8217; exist.\u00a0 He mentions the Coriolis effect, space debris, having to put the base station at sea, etc., etc., etc. and winds up estimating that the system will cost &#8216;$13.6 kazillion zillion&#8217;.\u00a0 Sigh.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I&#8217;ll send him a copy of the ISEC Journal (real soon now, promise!) and our report on Space Debris Mitigation&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catching up on an older item here&#8230; Over at the Space Elevator Reference, there was a post last November about a new product lab at Google, called Google X.\u00a0 The original story referred to is here.
