Strong Tether Competition &#8211; is Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 200px;\" title=\"undefined\" src=\"\/media\/tn_RopePull.jpg\" alt=\"undefined\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/>On Friday, August 12th, the next installment of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceward.org\/challenges-ts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strong Tether Competition<\/a>\u00a0of the Space Elevator Games, one of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/offices\/oct\/early_stage_innovation\/centennial_challenges\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA Centennial Challenges<\/a>, will take place. \u00a0It will be held on the first day of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorconference.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Space Elevator Conference<\/a>\u00a0and is part of the ISEC theme this year of &#8220;Longer, stronger tethers &#8211; 30MYuri or bust!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It looks like we have a couple of competitors this year and we are all hopeful that they can raise the bar on tether strength and help point the way to a material strong enough to build a Space Elevator.<\/p>\n<p>Like last year, the competition will be live video-streamed for your viewing pleasure. \u00a0The URL for the livestream is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ustream.tv\/channel\/nasa-centennial-challenge---strong-tether-competition\">here<\/a>, and the competition is scheduled to begin at 4:00pm, US Pacific time. \u00a0If you are unable to follow the competition live, I will be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/segames\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tweeting<\/a>\u00a0the activities as they occur.<\/p>\n<p>And today, on a related note, several of us visited\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cortlandcompany.com\/puget-sound-rope\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Puget Sound Rope<\/a>, one of the Cortland Cable companies. \u00a0They are located in Anacortes, about an hour and a half north of Redmond. \u00a0We had an absolutely fascinating tour of their factory and I took lots of pictures and videos &#8211; I will post these in the next few days. \u00a0But I wanted to share a YouTube video with you that they gave me the link to. \u00a0This video is a compressed version of a test-to-failure of a big, big rope. \u00a0The machine that does this testing is truly industrial strength &#8211;
