{"id":1417,"date":"2010-08-13T12:35:07","date_gmt":"2010-08-13T18:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1417"},"modified":"2010-08-13T12:35:07","modified_gmt":"2010-08-13T18:35:07","slug":"another-tether-entry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1417","title":{"rendered":"Another Tether entry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/media\/2010SEC\/IMG_3290.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"\/media\/2010SEC\/tn_IMG_3290.jpg\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" class=\"alignleft\" height=\"150\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a>Just in the past few minutes, the third tether entry in the Strong Tether competition confirmed that they will compete.\u00a0 A picture thumbnail of the nanotube loop being entered is included in this post (click on it for a full-size version).<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, this has little in common with the meter-sized loops from previous competitions.\u00a0 The Spaceward Foundation changed the rules this year to encourage more participation &#8211; and with three, confirmed entries, all of the carbon nanotubes, I think I can say it succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>Prize levels are different, depending on the weight of the entry and it&#8217;s specific strength.\u00a0 The different types of entries have been a challenge for Spaceward in adapting their &#8220;Tether Torture Rack&#8221; to them, but they have adapted as necessary.<\/p>\n<p>And now, full disclosure on my part.\u00a0 The entry picture in this post is from Odysseus Technologies, a company I have invested in.\u00a0 So, I will admit to some bias in rooting for\u00a0this particular entry to win ?.<\/p>\n<p>However, the important thing is that SOMEONE wins, because if they do, this means that the state-if-the-art in this field has been advanced, and, as the lack of strong enough material to build a Space Elevator is the &#8216;long pole in the tent&#8217;, a winner would mean that the day a Space Elevator can actually be built becomes more real.<\/p>\n<p>Still no details on uStream &#8211; I&#8217;ll post that as soon as I have it, promise&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just in the past few minutes, the third tether entry in the Strong Tether competition confirmed that they will compete.\u00a0 A picture thumbnail of the nanotube loop being entered is included in this post (click on it for a full-size version).
