{"id":1238,"date":"2009-07-21T14:51:58","date_gmt":"2009-07-21T19:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1238"},"modified":"2009-07-25T00:16:20","modified_gmt":"2009-07-25T05:16:20","slug":"usst-is-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1238","title":{"rendered":"USST is here&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/USSTNew_Logo.jpg\" style=\"width: 126px; height: 114px\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"126\" height=\"114\"  \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/2009SEGames\/tn_20090721_003.jpg\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\"  \/>USST is now here in force &#8211; they brought a whole army with them this time &#8211; I&#8217;m going to see if I can get a group shot of them sometime (part of them are out on the lakebed right now doing laser testing).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/2009SEGames\/tn_20090721_005.jpg\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\"  \/>When they arrived late for the first round of testing, no one was very worried that they wouldn&#8217;t eventually be ready.\u00a0 They did get a lot done in the short time they were onsite and were provisionally cleared to compete.\u00a0 And, we all know that they are a force to reckoned with in these Games, having had the best performing climbers in the 3 previous Games.\u00a0 They are also the only team with a successful laser climb to the top of the competition tether under their belt &#8211; and they did it multiple times in a row.<\/p>\n<p>Still, its nice to see them here, all loaded for bear as the are.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve included several pictures of their partially assembled climber in this post (they are putting it together as I blog).<\/p>\n<p>The topmost picture is of the top of their solar cell array while the second picture is of the bottom of the array.\u00a0 I picked it up &#8211; it&#8217;s not nearly as heavy as it looks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/2009SEGames\/tn_20090721_010.jpg\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\"  \/>This third picture is my favorite &#8211; it&#8217;s the case they use to transport part of their climber in.\u00a0 It looks suspiciously like the case I use for my Mossberg 535&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The last picture is of the treadmill that they use for some of their testing.\u00a0 You can see the climbing mechanism of their climber on the right.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/2009SEGames\/tn_20090721_011.jpg\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\"  \/>One more USST note; they&#8217;ve changed their website &#8211; the new location is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usst.usask.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.usst.usask.ca\/<\/a>.\u00a0 Because I hadn&#8217;t noticed this, I haven&#8217;t seen their latest updates including a very good summary of their last testing go-round.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really worth a read and lets you know the efforts and issues that these teams have to deal with.<\/p>\n<p>More later&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>USST is now here in force &#8211; they brought a whole army with them this time &#8211; I&#8217;m going to see if I can get a group shot of them sometime (part of them are out on the lakebed right now doing laser testing).
