{"id":1185,"date":"2009-04-13T00:21:25","date_gmt":"2009-04-13T05:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1185"},"modified":"2009-04-13T00:21:26","modified_gmt":"2009-04-13T05:21:26","slug":"space-elevator-miscellany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1185","title":{"rendered":"Space Elevator Miscellany&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a few Space Elevator related items which have showed up in the Search Engines over the past several days&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/GoogleVenturesLogo.jpg\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"338\" height=\"81\"  \/>Google, a company which has been rumored to be interested in building a Space Elevator, has formed a new venture entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/ventures\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Google Ventures<\/a>.\u00a0 When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2009\/04\/04\/the-google-ventures-cheat-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\">asked by Erick Schonfeld<\/a> about their interest in Space Elevators, Bill Maris (one of the fund managers) had this to say;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cShow me one that works,\u201d retorts Maris, \u201cand I will invest in it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That will be difficult, of course, until someone actually builds one.\u00a0 Over at Darnell Clayton&#8217;s most excellent Colony Worlds website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colonyworlds.com\/2009\/04\/google-we-would-invest-in-space.html\" target=\"_blank\">Darnell had this to say<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Perhaps the newly founded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isec.info\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Elevator Consortium<\/a> could help convince Google that a space elevator is something worth investing in, as gaining the support from a public company could go a long ways towards convincing the masses that this long term project is indeed viable.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Good idea, Darnell.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll follow up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">=================================<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/NewAmericaFoundationLogo.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"338\" height=\"46\"  \/>I found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newamerica.net\/publications\/articles\/2009\/beam_us_barack_9943\" target=\"_blank\">this article<\/a> by James Pinkerton of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newamerica.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">New America Foundation<\/a>.\u00a0 In it he talks about how investing in Space exploration would be an excellent economic driver for the US.\u00a0 He also discusses the China-India Space race (an issue that I&#8217;ve opined on before as a possible impetus to get India to partner up with Dubai and build a Space Elevator) and additionally talks about building a Space Elevator ourselves.\u00a0 To wit;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>And so, for example, if America were to succeed in building a \u2013in its essence a 22,000-mile cable, operating like a pulley, dangling down from a stationary satellite, a concept first put forth in the late 19th century\u2013that would be a major driver for economic growth. Japan has plans for just such a space elevator; aren\u2019t we getting a little tired of losing high-tech economic competitions to the Japanese?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We&#8217;ll, it&#8217;s a 60,000 mile long cable, but I like the sentiment&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">=================================<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/media\/Halo3Logo.jpg\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" height=\"147\"  \/>Finally if you&#8217;re a fan of <a href=\"http:\/\/halo.xbox.com\/halo3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Halo 3<\/a>, they&#8217;ve released the &#8220;<em>Mythic Map Pack<\/em>&#8220;, a new set of battlegrounds.\u00a0 The &#8220;<em>Orbital<\/em>&#8221; map is contained within a Space Elevator.\u00a0 From the <a href=\"http:\/\/halo.wikia.com\/wiki\/Orbital_(Level)\" target=\"_blank\">Halopedia<\/a> website;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Orbital takes place inside the docking-station for <a href=\"http:\/\/halo.wikia.com\/wiki\/Quito_Space_Tether\" title=\"Quito Space Tether\">Quito Space Tether<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/halo.wikia.com\/wiki\/Space_Elevator\" title=\"Space Elevator\">Space Elevator<\/a> that transports cargo and people in and out of the <a href=\"http:\/\/halo.wikia.com\/wiki\/Earth\" title=\"Earth\">Earths<\/a> atmosphere easily&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The map is located on an &#8220;empty <a href=\"http:\/\/halo.wikia.com\/wiki\/UNSC\" title=\"UNSC\">UNSC<\/a> space platform&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/halo.wikia.com\/wiki\/Orbital_%28Level%29#cite_note-2\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>, more specifically, the station atop the Quito Space Tether. The map contains plaques dedicated to Doctors <a href=\"http:\/\/halo.wikia.com\/wiki\/Tobias_Fleming_Shaw\" title=\"Tobias Fleming Shaw\">Tobias Fleming Shaw<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/halo.wikia.com\/wiki\/Wallace_Fujikawa\" title=\"Wallace Fujikawa\">Wallace Fujikawa<\/a>, the creators of the <a href=\"http:\/\/halo.wikia.com\/wiki\/Shaw-Fujikawa_Translight_Engine\" title=\"Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine\">Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine<\/a>, the map also contains a lot of aesthetical elements such as windows showing the Earth, electronic devices like display screens, escalators, and even a video phone.
