{"id":1158,"date":"2009-03-02T18:17:14","date_gmt":"2009-03-03T00:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1158"},"modified":"2009-03-02T18:17:14","modified_gmt":"2009-03-03T00:17:14","slug":"nothing-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1158","title":{"rendered":"Nothing new&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No, there&#8217;s nothing wrong with me (outside of a nasty cold that had me bed-ridden for a few days), there&#8217;s just not much going on in the &#8220;Space Elevator World&#8221; at this time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"123\" src=\"\/media\/SpacewardFoundationLogo.jpg\"  height=\"70\" style=\"width: 123px; height: 70px\" \/>Work still continues on finalizing arrangements for the next Space Elevator Games.\u00a0 It has been reported in many places (but NOT this blog) that the Games are scheduled for April 26th-30th, or alternatively, April 27th-May1st.\u00a0 This may yet happen but is NOT yet certain.\u00a0 When the dates and location are set, you&#8217;ll hear about it first here on this blog and, of course,\u00a0on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceward.org\">Spaceward website<\/a>.\u00a0 Several of us, including some team representatives,\u00a0visited the Kennedy Space Center in late February to meet with people from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mda.mil\/mdalink\/html\/introchapters\/istef_intro.html\">ISTEF<\/a>, the Kennedy Space Center, NASA, and several other groups to discuss logistical problems and find solutions.\u00a0 This is no small task.\u00a0 What Spaceward and the teams are attempting to accomplish this year is truly quite astonishing; creating a laser-powered\u00a0climber\u00a0speeding along at an\u00a0average speed of 5 meters\/second up a kilometer-long steel cable racetrack held up by a hovering helicopter.\u00a0 Because the teams are beaming class-4 lasers essentially straight up into the air, flight restrictions must be observed so that aircraft, especially low-flying aircraft,\u00a0are not allowed in the area during climbs.\u00a0\u00a0Also, the actual scheduling of the runs must take into account overhead satellite passes as it is might be possible for these lasers to\u00a0affect some satellite optics.\u00a0 In addition, because reflections from these lasers off of the climbers can be potentially dangerous, procedures and &#8216;safe&#8217; areas need be designated so that the &#8220;<em>6 year old albino kid who never blinks and has both a 12&#8243; Celestron telescope and a litigious mother<\/em>&#8221; are taken into account and\u00a0kept safe.\u00a0 All these problems are solvable, but\u00a0many parties are involved and all have to be satisfied that the plan is a sound one.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"281\" src=\"\/media\/TheSpaceShowLogo.jpg\"  height=\"54\" style=\"width: 281px; height: 54px\" \/>Speaking of lasers, LaserMotive&#8217;s Jordin Kare <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thespaceshow.com\/detail.asp?q=1112\">recently appeared<\/a>on Dr. David Livingston&#8217;s Space Show.\u00a0 Jordin really knows lasers and the show is quite informative &#8211; tune in and enjoy&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No, there&#8217;s nothing wrong with me (outside of a nasty cold that had me bed-ridden for a few days), there&#8217;s just not much going on in the &#8220;Space Elevator World&#8221; at this time.
