{"id":1150,"date":"2009-01-28T00:05:21","date_gmt":"2009-01-28T06:05:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1150"},"modified":"2009-01-28T10:32:00","modified_gmt":"2009-01-28T16:32:00","slug":"ten-x-stimulus-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1150","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Ten-X Stimulus Projects&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"225\" src=\"\/media\/FuturistSpeakerLogo.jpg\"  height=\"33\" style=\"width: 225px; height: 33px\" \/>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.davinciinstitute.com\/index.php\">DaVinci Institute&#8217;s<\/a> Thomas Frey has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.futuristspeaker.com\/2009\/01\/120\/\">given his opinion<\/a> on &#8220;<em>What projects can the U.S. government invest in to provide at least 10 times return on Investment?<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>One of the projects he supports is the Space Elevator;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The space elevator is a proposed system to transport material from the earth\u2019s surface into space.\u00a0 Many variations of this idea have been proposed, but the primary idea involves an elevator-type car that travels along a fixed cabling system held in place by a geostationary satellite orbiting the earth.\u00a0 The space elevator is intended to replace our present system of using rockets to transport people and equipment outside of the earth\u2019s atmosphere.\u00a0 Current technology is not capable of manufacturing a cabling system that is both strong enough and light enough to make this connection. \u00a0Most of the recent efforts have focused on the use of carbon nanotube-based materials for the tether design, since the strength of microscopic carbon nanotubes appears great enough to make this possible.\u00a0 A functional space elevator will become a primary driver of space commerce, enabling travel beyond earth\u2019s gravitational pull for a fraction of today\u2019s cost.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/FreightCarUp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"96\" src=\"\/media\/tn_FreightCarUp.jpg\"  height=\"200\" style=\"width: 96px; height: 200px\" \/><\/a>Nice to know we&#8217;re on\u00a0the list but he&#8217;s\u00a0not emphasizing\u00a0the main advantage of a Space Elevator, it&#8217;s scalability.\u00a0 There is really no limit to how big you can build this thing and thus how much capacity it can carry.\u00a0 Yes, the price per kilo\u00a0has to be reasonable, but if you can&#8217;t carry hundreds or thousands of tons per day into space,\u00a0the commercialization of space will be a very slow and painful process, no matter how inexpensive it is.<\/p>\n<p>Freight cars, think freight cars to space&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>(Picture of Freight Car from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.railgoat.railfan.net\/spcars\/index.htm\">here<\/a> &#8211; click on the thumbnail for a larger version)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The DaVinci Institute&#8217;s Thomas Frey has given his opinion on &#8220;What projects can the U.S. government invest in to provide at least 10 times return on Investment?&#8220;.
