{"id":1144,"date":"2009-01-18T15:06:24","date_gmt":"2009-01-18T21:06:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1144"},"modified":"2009-01-18T15:06:24","modified_gmt":"2009-01-18T21:06:24","slug":"the-times-online-and-cambridge-nanotube-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1144","title":{"rendered":"The Times Online and Cambridge nanotube efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/media\/TimesOnlineArticle_20090118.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/tn_TimesOnlineArticle_20090118.jpg\"  height=\"75\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 75px\" \/><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eurospaceward.org\">EuroSpaceward&#8217;s<\/a> Markus Klettner today sent me a link to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/driving\/features\/article5529668.ece?token=null&amp;offset=0&amp;page=1\">new article<\/a> about the Space Elevator in the Times Online.\u00a0 The focus\u00a0this article\u00a0is the work being done at Cambridge University by a team headed up with Professor Alan Windle.\u00a0 From the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The Cambridge team is making about 1 gram of the high-tech material per day, enough to stretch to 18 miles in length. \u201cWe have Nasa on the phone asking for 144,000 miles of the stuff, but there is a difference between what can be achieved in a lab and on an industrial level,\u201d says Alan Windle, professor of materials science at Cambridge University, who is anxious not to let the work get ahead of itself.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I must admit to some scepticism about NASA really making enquiries about this; it&#8217;s always been my understanding that they sponsor the Space Elevator Games because of their interest in Power-Beaming and ultra-strong materials, not because they plan on building a Space Elevator.\u00a0 It&#8217;s certainly not on any of NASA&#8217;s roadmaps and neither presidential candidate spoke about it &#8211; not even to win the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.speculist.com\/archives\/001841.html\">Speculist competition<\/a>! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>I have emailed Professor Windle about this and will post his reply when I receive it.<\/p>\n<p>I also liked the quote from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceward.org\">Spaceward&#8217;s<\/a> Ben Shelef;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We are talking about something totally different from the conventional concept of space travel,\u201d says Ben Shelef, chief executive officer of the Spaceward Foundation, NASA\u2019s partner in the project. \u201cThis is not about three astronauts on a special mission, it is about hundreds of tons a day being lifted into orbit.
