{"id":1097,"date":"2008-10-13T16:12:44","date_gmt":"2008-10-13T21:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1097"},"modified":"2008-10-13T16:12:44","modified_gmt":"2008-10-13T21:12:44","slug":"updates-from-the-national-space-society-nss-space-elevator-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1097","title":{"rendered":"Updates from the National Space Society (NSS) Space Elevator team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"162\" src=\"\/media\/NSSLogo.jpg\"  height=\"72\" style=\"width: 162px; height: 72px\" \/>I&#8217;ve received two updates from Bert Murray, captain of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nssspaceelevator.org\/\">NSS Space Elevator team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first is about a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.open2.net\/jamesmay\/power_to_people.html\">BBC TV show<\/a> that their climber was featured on.\u00a0 The show series is &#8220;<em>James May Big Idea: Power to the People<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 I had <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=978\">blogged<\/a> about the making of this\u00a0show, before, in April &#8211; and it&#8217;s finally made it to the small screen.\u00a0 Unfortunately, you can only see it if you are a UK resident.\u00a0 If you are, drop me a line \/ comment to let me know what it looked like (or send me the YouTube link \ud83d\ude42 ).<\/p>\n<p>From the show notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Continuing his journey to the US, James encounters a group of dedicated aerospace engineers who are planning to make a lift that will reach 20,000 miles into the skies. Their idea is to build a power station in space. James watches enthralled as they take their first tentative steps towards their goal &#8211; and a crack at a $2million [\u00a31million] prize.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/NSS_PowerBeamTest_1km.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/tn_NSS_PowerBeamTest_1km.jpg\"  height=\"160\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 160px\" \/><\/a>Their second item concerns recent laser testing they have done.\u00a0 Hot on the heels of the KC Space Pirates <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1095\">announcing<\/a> that they were successfully able to beam useful power for a full kilometer, NSS announces that they, too, can do this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The NSS Team has completed four Laser tests with Trumpf. The last test was long range and outside shooting over 1Km.
