{"id":1085,"date":"2008-09-22T11:29:53","date_gmt":"2008-09-22T16:29:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1085"},"modified":"2008-09-22T11:29:53","modified_gmt":"2008-09-22T16:29:53","slug":"will-japan-be-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1085","title":{"rendered":"Will Japan be first?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/2008SECDay3%20062.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/tn_2008SECDay3%20062.jpg\"  height=\"150\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>That&#8217;s the implication of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/uk\/science\/article4799369.ece\">this article<\/a>, published today in the TimesOnline (and linked to from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.drudgereport.com\/\">DrudgeReport<\/a> &#8211; guaranteeing a HUGE audience).\u00a0 I was excited when I read the headlines (&#8220;<em>Japan hopes to turn sci-fi into reality with elevator to the stars<\/em>&#8220;), but the article mentioned no new breakthroughs in this effort.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, the\u00a0likelihood of the Japanese building the world&#8217;s first Space Elevator certainly cannot be discounted.\u00a0 They are a technologically sophisticated and financially able people.\u00a0 It is not at all beyond the realm of possibility that the Japanese could decide to wean themselves from the oil economy by launching a number of Solar Power Satellites (SPS) for their own use and the only way that they (or anyone) is going to be able to launch a significant amount of payload (i.e. SPS) into orbit is with a Space Elevator.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re all waiting for the breakthrough in carbon nanotubes and the accelerating pace of research into this field means, IMHO, that this\u00a0is not far away at all; I think we will see &#8216;the breakthrough&#8217; before this decade is out.\u00a0 And, when that happens, the idea of a Space Elevator\u00a0could move very quickly from an academic exercise to a new &#8216;space race&#8217;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The article mentions the upcoming Space Elevator conference being held in Japan on November 15th and 16th.\u00a0 I&#8217;m told that the English language progam for this conference will be available soon.\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to be attending this conference and very much look forward to going.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese also had a large presence at the recent Space Elevator conference held at the Microsoft Conference center (I blogged about it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1052\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 The picture, above, is of the attendees from Japan at this conference (click on it for a larger version).<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese Space Elevator Association also has an extensive website (all in Japanese) which can be found <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jsea.jp\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s the implication of this article, published today in the TimesOnline (and linked to from the DrudgeReport &#8211; guaranteeing a HUGE audience).\u00a0 I was excited when I read the headlines (&#8220;Japan hopes to turn sci-fi into reality with elevator to the stars&#8220;), but the article mentioned no new breakthroughs in this effort.
