Clarke.\u00a0 His works, fiction and non-fiction, are compelling, well-researched, out-of-the-box, etc., etc., etc.\u00a0 No one who knows me should be surprised that I pre-ordered his final book (<em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Last-Theorem-Arthur-C-Clarke\/dp\/0345470214\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1219087262&amp;sr=8-1\">The Last Theorem<\/a><\/em>, co-authored with Frederik Pohl) from Amazon, just to ensure that I would receive it as soon as\u00a0it came out.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, the book was quite a disappointment &#8211; the collaboration between these two great authors maybe just didn&#8217;t work\u00a0or Sir Clarke&#8217;s inability, due to his illness, to contribute more fully might have been a problem, or something.\u00a0\u00a0I kept waiting for the book to GO SOMEWHERE, but it never did.<\/p>\n<p>The list of flaws is long; the aliens introduced were cartoonish and plastic, the sub-plot with the main character&#8217;s son (who seemed to have some sort of advanced mental capability) went nowhere, the title of the book\u00a0didn&#8217;t have anything to do with the main storyline (whatever that was &#8211; it was difficult to tell), previous ideas of Sir Clarke&#8217;s (a fascination with pentominoes, solar sail racing, low-gravity olympics) were revisited in a boring, copycat\u00a0manner, etc., etc., etc.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yes, a Space Elevator is mentioned and briefly discussed, but no new ideas are talked about.<\/p>\n<p>Ah well, I have many of his other books I can re-read and re-enjoy.\u00a0 IMHO, his best works were <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sands-Mars-Arthur-C-Clarke\/dp\/0553290959\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1219087540&amp;sr=1-2\">The Sands of Mars<\/a><\/em> (even as out-dated as it now is), <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Songs-Distant-Earth-Arthur-Clarke\/dp\/0345322401\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1219087664&amp;sr=1-1\">Songs of Distant Earth<\/a><\/em>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rendezvous-Rama-Arthur-C-Clarke\/dp\/0553287893\/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1219087756&amp;sr=1-2\">Rendevous with Rama<\/a> and <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Childhoods-End-Arthur-C-Clarke\/dp\/0345347951\/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1219087591&amp;sr=1-2\">Childhoods End<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 And, of course, Space Elevator afficianados are huge fans of his <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fountains-Paradise-Arthur-C-Clarke\/dp\/0446677949\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1219087829&amp;sr=1-1\">The Fountains of Paradise<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 Finally, if you like short stories with a good bit of (English) humor in them, check out <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tales-White-Hart-Arthur-Clarke\/dp\/089190249X\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1219087888&amp;sr=1-1\">Tales from the White Hart<\/a><\/em>, a series of stories told at the White Hart pub.<\/p>\n<p>My advice on <em>The Last Theorem<\/em>, wait for the paperback version or get it from the library.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who has paid any\u00a0attention to this blog knows that I am a HUGE fan of Sir Arthur C.
