{"id":1065,"date":"2008-08-03T10:28:13","date_gmt":"2008-08-03T15:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1065"},"modified":"2008-08-03T10:28:13","modified_gmt":"2008-08-03T15:28:13","slug":"who-will-build-the-first-earth-based-space-elevator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1065","title":{"rendered":"Who will build the first, Earth-based Space Elevator?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"144\" src=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/2008SECLogoSmall.gif\"  height=\"144\" style=\"width: 144px; height: 144px\" \/>At the recent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorconference.org\">Space Elevator Conference<\/a>,\u00a0I gave a presentation entitled <em><strong>&#8220;Who will build the first, Earth-based Space Elevator&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>?\u00a0 This was also\u00a0the title of the presentation which I\u00a0gave at last year&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sesinstitute.org\/\">SESI conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To\u00a0arrive at a reasonable, defendable\u00a0answer for this question, I\u00a0looked at the problem from two different angles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What would be the motive for building the first, earth-based Space Elevator<\/li>\n<li>Who would have the technical capabilities to actually build an earth-based Space Elevator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My conclusion was\u00a0essentially the same as last year;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only the profit-motive would be strong enough to drive the building of the first Earth-based space elevator<\/li>\n<li>There are 7 &#8216;entities&#8217; who would be capable (considering a 2025 &#8216;earliest-build-date) of actually building a Space Elevator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on that assumption, I believe that the two most likely probabilities are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A consortium of US Companies partnering with the US Government<\/li>\n<li>A Joint Venture between the Governments of Dubai and India<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A third group I picked as a possibility (the &#8216;dark-horse&#8217;) in this race was an effort by the Japanese Government.\u00a0 Based on what we saw at the recent conference, there is the beginnings of a serious effort underway in Japan to make this happen.<\/p>\n<p>For details on why I picked what I did, you can view the presentation <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/Who%20will%20build%20the%20first,%20earth-based%20Space%20Elevator.pdf\">here<\/a> (it&#8217;s a pdf file) and for more detailed reasons on why I picked a possible Joint Venture between the governments of Dubai and India, please read my post (<em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=579\">&#8216;Emerging Asia&#8217;<\/a><\/em>)\u00a0I put up about this\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n<p>You heard it here first&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the recent Space Elevator Conference,\u00a0I gave a presentation entitled &#8220;Who will build the first, Earth-based Space Elevator&#8221;?\u00a0 This was also\u00a0the title of the presentation which I\u00a0gave at last year&#8217;s SESI conference.
