{"id":1064,"date":"2008-07-29T11:52:49","date_gmt":"2008-07-29T16:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1064"},"modified":"2008-07-29T11:54:38","modified_gmt":"2008-07-29T16:54:38","slug":"happy-50th-birthday-nasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1064","title":{"rendered":"Happy 50th Birthday NASA!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"250\" src=\"\/media\/NASALogo.jpg\"  height=\"63\" style=\"width: 250px; height: 63px\" \/>On this day, 50 years ago, President Dwight Eisenhower signed The National Aeronautics and Space Act (Pub.L. 85-568) to create The National Aeronautics and Space Agency, more commonly known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\">NASA<\/a>.\u00a0 NASA was created to respond to the challenge of Sputnik and\u00a0officially began operations on October 1st of that year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/NASA_Founding.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/tn_NASA_Founding.jpg\"  height=\"159\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 159px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve always admired NASA, in spite of its well-chronicled woes, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=689\">posted<\/a> my thoughts about them last year (so I won&#8217;t repeat them).\u00a0 Suffice it to say I&#8217;m a big fan.<\/p>\n<p>The picture\u00a0(from the NASA web site) shows President Eisenhower (center),\u00a0Dr. T. Keith Glennan, right, commissioned as the first administrator for NASA and Dr. Hugh L.
