{"id":1051,"date":"2008-07-19T01:13:27","date_gmt":"2008-07-19T06:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1051"},"modified":"2008-07-19T01:13:27","modified_gmt":"2008-07-19T06:13:27","slug":"2008sec-day-1-conference-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1051","title":{"rendered":"2008SEC &#8211; Day 1 &#8211; Conference notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve given up trying to chronicle everything as it is happening at the conference &#8211; there&#8217;s just too much going on.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a fan of the Space Elevator, this conference is truly &#8220;red meat&#8221; (unless you&#8217;re a vegetarian, of course, in which this conference is truly &#8220;red beans&#8221; \ud83d\ude42 )&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, the quantity and quality of the content today was very high,\u00a0exceeding even my\u00a0lofty\u00a0expectations.\u00a0 The conference venue is also superb &#8211; the Microsoft Conference center is one of the best\u00a0I&#8217;ve ever been at.\u00a0 Every place to sit has desk space, outlets, access to excellent wireless network, etc.\u00a0\u00a0It allows you to concentrate on the conferece proceedings, which is the way it should be&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today, I tried to chronicle things as they were happening, but it was causing me to miss too much of the Conference&#8217;s content.\u00a0 So, I&#8217;m going to put up a few more posts now of some of the days highlights.\u00a0 It&#8217;s probably all I will be able to manage tomorrow, too.\u00a0 However, I now have lots of blogging material for the next week or two, so expect a barrage of Conference reports in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>So, some miscellaneous notes from today before I return to covering some of the presentations&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/2008SECDay%20251.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/tn_2008SECDay1%20251.jpg\"  height=\"150\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>One of the great things about being involved in the Space Elevator effort is all of the\u00a0wonderful people I&#8217;ve been able to meet.\u00a0 Three of them are in this picture.\u00a0 From left to right, they are Bryan Laubscher, Martin Lades and Alan Boyle.\u00a0 Bryan and Martin are the conference chairs and organizers (along with a few others who I will mention later on).\u00a0 Bryan and Martin were also on the Space Show a few days ago, discussing the then upcoming conference (an event I chronicled <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1035\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/10912485\/\">Alan<\/a>, of course, is the Science Editor at MSNBC.com and the editor\/owner of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com\/\">Cosmic Log<\/a>.\u00a0 He&#8217;s a great journalist, the owner of numerous awards, is wonderful to work with and already has an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com\/archive\/2008\/07\/18\/1206845.aspx\">excellent post<\/a> up on his Cosmic Log about the conference.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/2008SECDay1%20249.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/tn_2008SECDay1%20249.jpg\"  height=\"150\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>This is another picture of Alan along with Peter Swan (on the right), my co-chair of the Social\/PR pillar.\u00a0 More about the pillars tomorrow, when we actually start the Pillar sessions.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/2008SECDay1%20248.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/2008SEC\/tn_2008SECDay1%20248.jpg\"  height=\"150\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>And here is a picture of Ben Shelef of the Spaceward foundation (on the left) and Andy Price.\u00a0 Andy sends out &#8220;email nuggets&#8221; regarding carbon nanotube developments &#8211; interesting stuff that I often blog about.\u00a0 Can you tell that they have slightly different heights?
