Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"188\" src=\"\/media\/MSLogo-Small.jpg\"  height=\"51\" style=\"width: 188px; height: 51px\" \/>Only\u00a0two more days until the 2008 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorconference.org\/\">Space Elevator Conference<\/a> begins.\u00a0 It&#8217;s being sponsored, in part, by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\">Microsoft<\/a> and is being held at the Microsoft Conference Center in Redmond, Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The Microsoft connection has been noted in at least one place in the blogosphere by a Microsoft employee.\u00a0 In <strong>Under an Orange Sky<\/strong>, blogger Cian Hayes, in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/underanorangesky.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/windows-vista-space-elevator-edition.html\">post<\/a> titled <em>&#8216;Windows Vista Space Elevator Edition&#8217;<\/em> notes that <em>&#8220;The company newsletter today had a blurb about a space elevator conference being held on the microsoft campus this month.\u00a0 Yes, one of <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_elevator\"><em>those <\/em><\/a><em>elevators.\u00a0 Apparently Microsoft is sponsoring the conference, which is interesting because we&#8217;re not really known for throwing our weight behind crackpot schemes&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>GeekNews also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.geeknews.net\/2008\/07\/11\/space-elevator-gets-a-lift-from-microsoft\">notes<\/a> the Microsoft connection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/JeanLucPicardBorg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"144\" src=\"\/media\/tn_JeanLucPicardBorg.jpg\"  height=\"200\" style=\"width: 144px; height: 200px\" \/><\/a>My own Microsoft story&#8230;\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never worked FOR Microsoft, but I have worked with their technical people.\u00a0 My last job (before I retired) was at a Silicon-valley based company called Portal Software (now owned by Oracle).\u00a0 We had product (Infranet) which Microsoft was implementing to help\u00a0them bill for\u00a0their Internet services.\u00a0 I had to attend a meeting with the Microsoft people in Bellevue and, just the way my time\/schedule worked out, I was the first person to arrive at the restaurant where the meeting was being held.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t find where to sit down so I asked the waiter where the table was.\u00a0 He asked me which company was hosting the dinner and, when I told him &#8216;Microsoft&#8217;, he replied &#8216;Oh, the Borg&#8217;.\u00a0 Well, I thought it was funny&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, we&#8217;re all grateful\u00a0to Microsoft for\u00a0hosting this conference.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t the first time they&#8217;ve been involved with something related to the Space Elevator.\u00a0 As I related in an earlier <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=951\">post<\/a>, Bryan Laubscher once gave a presentation at Microsoft and one can only hope that they do see some long-term benefit to this.\u00a0 Nothing like having one of the powers of the Universe behind you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Only two more days &#8211; see you there!<\/p>\n<p><em>Picture of Jean-Luc Picard from <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/scan.net.au\/scan\/journal\/images\/1206\/cranny-francis\/Somatic%20Tech_Figure-1.jpg\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Microsoft Logo from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/Presspass\/gallery\/ms-logos.mspx?FINISH=YES\">here<\/a> (and yes, I think I&#8217;ve complied with all of the copyright restrictions&#8230;)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Only\u00a0two more days until the 2008 Space Elevator Conference begins.\u00a0 It&#8217;s being sponsored, in part, by Microsoft and is being held at the Microsoft Conference Center in Redmond, Washington.
