{"id":1020,"date":"2008-05-31T22:20:56","date_gmt":"2008-06-01T03:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1020"},"modified":"2008-05-31T22:20:56","modified_gmt":"2008-06-01T03:20:56","slug":"isdc2008-day-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1020","title":{"rendered":"ISDC2008 &#8211; Day 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today was the last full day of this year&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.isdc2008.jpg\">ISDC<\/a> conference and also a day which saw the two sessions devoted to the idea of a Space Elevator.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/ISDC2008_Day3%20023.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/tn_ISDC2008_Day3%20023.jpg\"  height=\"150\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>The first session today was presented by independent researcher Jim Dempsey and was entitled <em>Space Elevator Initial Deployment<\/em>.\u00a0 Jim is not convinced that the tether deploymen proposed by Brad Edwards (i.e., placing an initial ribbon carrying a climber at Geo and then spooling the ribbon down to earth) will work, mainly due to ribbon fluctuations.\u00a0 He&#8217;s proposed an alternative, deploying many tether fibers individually down to earth and then, when a sufficient number of them are in place, sending a climber up the &#8216;bundle&#8217;, combining them into a tether as it goes.\u00a0 He has an Internet-reachable presentation which I&#8217;m unable to find at the moment &#8211; I&#8221;ll link to it when I can find it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/ISDC2008_Day3%20020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/tn_ISDC2008_Day3%20020.jpg\"  height=\"150\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>Incidentally, I&#8217;ve mentioned Jim in a couple of previous posts (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=620\">here<\/a>, where he related a very prescient observation from Sir Isaac Newton,\u00a0and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=275\">here<\/a>, where he weighs in on the paper by Nicolas Pugno) and he will be presenting at this year&#8217;s Space Elevator Conference.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/ISDC2008_Day3%20031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/tn_ISDC2008_Day3%20031.jpg\"  height=\"150\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>Next up was a joint presentation by Ben Shelef of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceward.org\">Spaceward Foundation<\/a> and Bert Murray of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nssspaceelevator.org\/\">National Space Society (NSS) Space Elevator Team<\/a>.\u00a0 Ben went first and gave an overview of the Space Elevator Games, discussing how\/why they were founded, their history and their current status.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/ISDC2008_Day3%20038.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/tn_ISDC2008_Day3%20038.jpg\"  height=\"150\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>Bert then took the stage and gave an interesting presentation of what the NSS team is planning to do.\u00a0 The prize money for theClimber\/Power-Beaming competition is being awarded in two different levels; $900,000 for a single winner with valid climb of 2m\/s and $2,000,000 for a single winner with a valid climb of 5m\/s.\u00a0 The NSS team is going for the whole $2,000,000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/ISDC2008_Day3%20002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/ISDC2008\/tn_ISDC2008_Day3%20002.jpg\"  height=\"150\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>Finally, we have a\u00a0photo\u00a0of the &#8220;concept&#8221; climber built by the\u00a0NSS Space Elevator team.\u00a0 It is the one they used in the BBC documentary I <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=978\">blogged<\/a> about here.\u00a0 It is a small unit (for reference, I placed a quarter on the table just in front of it), but appears very rugged and efficient.\u00a0 And, obviously it worked&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll do a wrap-up post tomorrow or Monday.<\/p>\n<p><em>(As always, click on the thumbnails for a larger version of the picture)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today was the last full day of this year&#8217;s ISDC conference and also a day which saw the two sessions devoted to the idea of a Space Elevator.
