{"id":1000,"date":"2008-05-13T20:37:34","date_gmt":"2008-05-14T01:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1000"},"modified":"2008-05-13T20:41:29","modified_gmt":"2008-05-14T01:41:29","slug":"latest-version-of-space-elevator-competition-rulebooks-now-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spaceelevatorblog.com\/?p=1000","title":{"rendered":"Latest version of Space Elevator competition rulebooks now online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest set of rulebooks for the Climber \/ Power-Beaming and Tether events at the Spaceward Games are now available online.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/DSC00365.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"200\" src=\"\/media\/tn_DSC00365.jpg\"  height=\"113\" style=\"width: 200px; height: 113px\" \/><\/a>The general outline for this year&#8217;s\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceward.org\/documents\/elevator2010\/Handbook-pb2008-0.15.pdf\">Climber \/ Power-Beaming<\/a> event has been known for some time; the climb has been increased to a full kilometer and the average speed needed to be in the running for a prize has been increased to 2m\/sec (for the\u00a0nine hundred thousand\u00a0dollar prize) and 5 m\/sec (for the two million dollar prize).\u00a0 Note that there\u00a0will be smaller prizes awarded to those teams who make it to the top at less than 2 m\/sec but\u00a0average at least 1 m\/sec.\u00a0\u00a0Amounts paid will be determined by the number of qualifiers and their overall ranking.\u00a0\u00a0To date, a total of eleven teams have signed up.\u00a0 All of them will be laser-powered and all but one (the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.txlgroup.com\/\">TXL Group<\/a>) will be using lasers in the &#8216;conventional&#8217; sense, i.e. using photovoltaic cells to convert the laser energy into electricial energy.\u00a0 The TXL Group will be using <em>&#8220;&#8230;a combination of phase change and thermoelectric technology to provide energy to the climber.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/media\/DSC00268.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"113\" src=\"\/media\/tn_DSC00268.jpg\"  height=\"200\" style=\"width: 113px; height: 200px\" \/><\/a>Newly released is the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceward.org\/documents\/elevator2010\/Handbook-ts2008-0.10.pdf\">rulebook<\/a> for the Tether challenge.\u00a0 In previous years, the challenge has been to find a tether that is at least 50% stronger than the house tether.\u00a0 The bar this year has been raised to find a tether that is a)\u00a0at least 100% stronger than the house tether and b) stronger than 5MYuri (see below).\u00a0 Two levels of prize money are available in this competition as well.\u00a0 If a 2-gram competition tether proves stronger than a 4-gram house tether and 5 MYuri, this entrant is eligible for all or part of the first million dollar prize pool.\u00a0 If a 2-gram competition tether proves stronger than an 8-gram house tether and 10MYuri, this entrant is eligible for all or part of the second million dollar prize pool also.\u00a0 Amounts paid will be determined by the number of qualifiers and their overall ranking.\u00a0 With the advances we&#8217;ve seen in carbon nanotube technology over the past several months, this may well be within reach &#8211; we all certainly hope so.\u00a0 At the moment, no one has signed up for this competition &#8211; we hope to see the return of DeltaX and perhaps some other teams with carbon-nanotube tethers.\u00a0 And hey, if someone can come up with something else strong enough to win the prize, we&#8217;d all be eager to see it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Ben Shelef of the Spaceward Foundation has proposed a new measurement, the Yuri, named in honor of Yuri Artsutanov.\u00a0 From the competition rulebook:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One Yuri = SI-Natural pa-m<sup>3<\/sup>\/kg, or N-m\/kg, and thus a MYuri (Mega-Yuri) is equivalent to the commonly used units of GPa-cc\/g and N\/Tex.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Only\u00a0136 days to go&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>(Both picture thumbnails are from the 2007 Spaceward Games.\u00a0 The first one\u00a0is a night-vision shot of the USST Climber as it neared the top of the ribbon.\u00a0 The second\u00a0one is of the &#8216;Tether Torture machine&#8217;, before the Tether competition began.\u00a0 Click on either thumbnail for a larger version.)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest set of rulebooks for the Climber \/ Power-Beaming and Tether events at the Spaceward Games are now available online.
