Climber / Power-Beaming competition update

Over at the official website of the Space Elevator Games, the CrazyEddieBlogger (aka Spaceward CEO Ben Shelef), reviews the status of where we are at.

Simply put; “…the helicopter flight was not successful in maintaining constant tension or position, which resulted in a safety device dropping the line.”

This is being addressed and as soon as an agreed-upon plan has been put together to solve the helicopter flight issues and a new schedule created, we’ll let everyone know.

In the meantime, stay tuned to this blog for the latest updates and all the space-elevator related news…

This is why you don’t leave testing a completely new and essential component of your operations until the last minute.

Are any of the teams threatening to pull out due to these further delays? Will the teams that didn’t qualify be given another opportunity to do so when the competition reassembles?

This device WAS tested individually before the event, several times, and performed correctly. It also performed correctly in a test after the event. When you are paying several thousand dollars per hour for a helicopter and its pilot, you can’t always be choosy about when you can test an entire system.

The three remaining teams are not threatening to pull out – they are all eager to compete. The competition is now closed to new entries – it is very expensive to set up qualification runs and the focus is now on the games themselves with the three teams which have demonstrated that they are ready to go.
